Celebrate the Harvest Season with Porridge Oats
October 9, 2019
From the beginning, Rogers Foods has prided itself on working directly with Canadian farmers to source the best quality ingredients. It’s harvest season, and as we gear up for Canadian Thanksgiving, it’s time to celebrate our farmers and enjoy delicious food. There are always the classics: stuffing, mashed potatoes, and the long-standing star of the show turkey! However, why not change it up this holiday with a few vibrant, healthy, non-traditional side dishes?
Jane Dummer, RD suggests thinking outside the conventional side dishes this season, “I recommend a few autumn-inspired dishes filled with fall flavours, crunchy pumpkin seeds, plus seasonal fruits and vegetables. Healthy, colourful sides can offset the beige monochromatic and richness of the other traditional holiday dishes. It is a wonderful time of year to celebrate and give thanks from the farm to the table, while keeping seasonal ingredients and nutrition in mind.”
It’s a savoury sweet twist on a traditional favourite. This delicious stovetop stuffing is made with local ingredients like maple syrup, butternut squash and apples, plus the Porridge Oats & Ancient Grains. And don’t forget the pumpkin seeds. It’s easy to make and is high in fibre, vitamin A and C. Perfect to enjoy with the turkey.
Who says stuffing can only be eaten at Thanksgiving? Enjoy the scrumptious fall – winter ingredients in this simple recipe all season long.
You may have a lot on your plate before it comes time to actually filling everyone else’s plates on Turkey Day itself! This make-ahead, colourful curry mango salad is a refreshing blend of sweet and mild heat in the citrus dressing. We love the deliciousness of quinoa, Porridge Oats & Ancient Grains and cashews. It’s served cold and is rich in antioxidants and fiber from all the ingredients including the mango. Plus it has 7 grams of plant-based protein per serving, ideal for your vegan and vegetarian guests.
It’s perfect to make ahead as a nutritious and vibrant side dish for Thanksgiving dinner, and then pack it as a healthy leftover for your work week.
This flavourful side dish is ready in just 20 minutes! Made in just one skillet, the Porridge Oats & Ancient Grains add texture, taste and nutrition to this savoury, sweet pilaf. We added dried cranberries for Thanksgiving; however, we encourage you to customize the dried fruit ingredients depending on the season. It’s high in fibre and is a good source of plant protein. This pilaf freezes well, so don’t worry if you have leftovers.
Your family and friends will enjoy seeing more colour at the table alongside the traditional favourites like mashed potatoes!
